FPS Game Settings Cheat Sheet: 8 Shooters, One Table
Competitive settings are 80% shared logic and 20% per-game detail, and most guides only give you one half. This page gives both: a single table you can read in thirty seconds, then a short note per game explaining what makes it different. No benchmark numbers, no "best player" configs — just values you can enter and the reasoning behind them.
The Shared Rules
- Render scale at 100 (or native). Softened edges cost you targets at range; expensive effects cost you frames.
- Shadows low. They darken rooms where players hold angles — faster and clearer at the same time.
- Textures and anisotropic filtering high. Cheap, and they decide whether you recognise objects at distance.
- VSync off, frame rate capped. Latency down, frame time flat.
- Motion blur off. It smears exactly the movement you are reading.
The Table
| Game | Render scale | Anti-aliasing | Shadows | Textures | Effects | Cap / VSync |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CS2 | Native | CMAA2 or off | Low | Low–Medium | Low | Cap / off |
| Valorant | Native | Off or light | Low | Medium | Low | Cap / off |
| Apex | Native | TSAA on | Low | Medium | Low | Cap / off |
| Warzone | 100% | SMAA | Low–Med | Normal–High | Low | Cap / off |
| PUBG | 100% | Low–Med | Very low | Medium | Very low | Cap / off |
| Overwatch 2 | 100 | Low or off | Low | Med–High | Low | Cap / off |
| Siege | 100 | TAA or FXAA | Med–Low | High | Low | Cap / off |
| Marvel Rivals | Quality upscale | Via upscaler | Low | Medium | Low | Cap / off |
Counter-Strike 2
Turn Boost Player Contrast on — it is the highest-value toggle in the menu. Keep FSR disabled and anisotropic filtering at 16x. MSAA is a cosmetic cost here; CMAA2 or off keeps frame times flat. Full guide: CS2 settings.
Valorant
The game runs on almost anything, so spend the surplus on clarity: native resolution, textures up, effects down, and every "distraction" option off. Cap at your refresh; uncapped only adds heat. Full guide: Valorant settings.
Apex Legends
Visibility first: low shadows and low effects keep sightlines open, while TSAA stays on to stop edge shimmer on foliage. Keep texture streaming quality reasonable — muddy textures cost you target identification at range. Full guide: Apex settings.
Warzone
Render resolution at 100 is non-negotiable; cut shadows, reflections and ambient occlusion instead. Textures can stay Normal–High because they mostly cost memory. Remember textures stream in — the first minute after landing looks worse by design. Full guide: Warzone settings.
PUBG
Foliage is the rare double win: cheaper and better for spotting prone players. View distance is the opposite — do not bottom it out. Screen Scale stays at 100. Full guide: PUBG settings.
Overwatch 2
Two toggles define the experience: Reduce Buffering on and Reflex on, both for latency rather than frame rate. Render Scale stays at 100 so hero silhouettes stay clean. Full guide: Overwatch 2 settings.
Rainbow Six Siege
Your real decision is anti-aliasing: TAA steadies railings and window frames but can smear moving targets; FXAA keeps motion crisp at the cost of shimmer. Either is defensible. Keep LOD high so distant operators still read as people. Full guide: Siege settings.
Marvel Rivals
Unreal Engine 5's lighting is the cost centre: cut global illumination and shadows before anything else, and run the upscaler at Quality. Hero models stay at Medium — silhouettes are the information. Full guide: Marvel Rivals settings.
What to Change First If You Drop Frames Mid-Fight
- Effects quality — particles stack exactly when fights happen.
- Shadows — second most expensive, and low is clearer anyway.
- Reflections / ambient occlusion — expensive, tactically worthless.
- Frame cap down one step — a cap you always hold beats a higher one you sometimes miss.
Disclaimer: All settings recommendations are subjective preference guides only. Results may vary based on individual hardware, game patch version, driver releases and personal visual taste. This is not a guaranteed universal fix. We do not provide any system modification instructions and take no responsibility for any changes you make inside your game. Always adjust game settings gradually to suit your own preference.
FAQ
Do pro players use the same settings?
They share the logic — visibility over fidelity — but values differ with hardware and habits. Copy the structure, set values your own machine holds.
Is 4:3 stretched still viable?
In games that allow it, yes, as a preference: wider models, distorted image. Test it for a week before judging, since sensitivity feel changes too.
Which game is the most demanding in this list?
Marvel Rivals, because of its Unreal Engine 5 lighting, followed by Warzone. CS2 and Valorant run comfortably on modest hardware.
