The Tool Philosophy — Less Is More
Gloomwood is not a game where you become a one-person army. You stay weak throughout the entire game. Your weapons are limited, ammo is scarce, and every tool has a specific purpose. The key to success is knowing when to use each tool and when to conserve it.
Think of your inventory as a puzzle-solving kit rather than an arsenal. Every locked door, every enemy patrol, every dark corridor is a problem that can be solved with the right tool — but you might not have that tool yet. That's okay. Come back later when you're better equipped.
💡 Pro Tip: Your most important tool is your brain. Before using any consumable, ask yourself: "Is there another way to solve this problem?" Often, there is.
Melee Weapons — Quiet but Risky
Melee weapons are your go-to for stealth kills. They're silent, don't consume ammo, and can take down most basic enemies in one hit if you land a backstab.
- Rusty Nail — Your starting weapon. It's terrible in a direct fight but can pick locks (breaks after 3 uses). Use it for lockpicking, not combat. If you must fight with it, aim for headshots — it takes 3-4 hits to kill a guard.
- Shiv — An upgrade over the nail. Found in the prison kitchen. Deals more damage and can be used for stealth kills. Still not great for open combat, but it gets the job done.
- Lead Pipe — The best melee weapon you'll find for a while. Found in the Streets District sewer entrance. Deals high damage and can knock enemies down. Two hits to the head kill most guards. This is your main weapon for the early-to-mid game.
- Hatchet — Found in the Manor Estate garden shed. Fast, light, and deals decent damage. Good for quick hit-and-run attacks. Can also break wooden crates.
- Rat King's Tooth Dagger — A unique dagger crafted from the Rat King's Tooth (found in the sewers). Fastest weapon in the game. Excellent for backstabs. One-shots most basic enemies from behind.
💡 Pro Tip: Melee weapons degrade over time. Check your weapon condition regularly. A broken weapon deals almost no damage and makes a loud clanging sound with every hit.
Ranged Weapons — Loud but Effective
Ranged weapons are powerful but risky. Gunshots alert every enemy in the area, so you need to be strategic about when you use them.
- Revolver — The first gun you'll find. Located in the Locked Armory in the Streets District (requires Warden's Key). Six shots per reload. One headshot kills any human enemy. Use it only for emergencies or to take out high-priority targets.
- Crossbow — Found in the Manor Estate attic. Silent ranged option. Bolts can be retrieved from dead bodies. One headshot kills most enemies. This is your best friend for stealth playthroughs.
- Shotgun — Found in the Cathedral armory. Devastating at close range but slow to reload. Can kill multiple enemies with one shot if they're grouped up. Ammo is extremely rare — save it for the final escape sequence.
Ammo Conservation Tips:
- Always try melee first. Only use guns when you have no other option.
- Retrieve crossbow bolts from bodies. They're reusable.
- Ammo pickups are finite. Once you use them, they're gone forever.
- Headshots are always lethal. Practice your aim.
Tools & Gadgets — Your Problem-Solving Kit
Tools are just as important as weapons in Gloomwood. Here's every tool and what it does:
- Lockpicks — Single-use items that open locked doors and chests. Found throughout the world. Prioritize using them on shortcut doors and supply caches. Never use a lockpick on a door that has a key somewhere — find the key instead.
- Crowbar — Used to pry open wooden crates, barred doors, and sewer grates. Found in the prison basement. Indestructible and essential for exploration.
- Lantern — Your light source. Provides illumination but makes you visible to enemies. Use it sparingly. You can turn it on and off with a button press — use quick flashes to check dark corners without revealing yourself.
- Gas Canister + Rag — Combine these to create a smoke bomb. Smoke bombs create a cloud that blocks enemy vision. Use them to cross open areas or escape from tough situations. The gas canister is found in the Manor Estate garden shed.
- Meat — Used to distract hounds. Throw it in a direction away from your path and the hounds will investigate. Also used to bypass the Rat King in the sewers.
- Bottles & Coins — Throwable distractions. Bottles make a loud shatter sound. Coins make a smaller clink. Use coins for subtle distractions and bottles for big ones.
💡 Pro Tip: The crowbar can also be used as a weapon in a pinch. It's slow but deals decent damage. Not ideal, but better than nothing if you're cornered.
Key Items — What Opens What
Gloomwood is full of keys and key items. Here's a quick reference for what opens what:
- Warden's Key — Opens the Locked Armory in the Streets District (contains the revolver). Found in the prison's upper office.
- Warden's Second Key — Opens the maximum security wing in the prison (accessible after obtaining the Manor Crest). Contains the final escape key item.
- Manor Crest — Not a key itself, but acquiring it triggers events that open new paths. Found in the Manor Estate master bedroom.
- Bronze Gear — Used to open the main sewer grate in Market Row. Found in the Clock Tower puzzle reward.
- Bishop's Key — Opens the final gate in the Cathedral. Found in the Cathedral office, guarded by the Bishop's Confessor.
- Safe Combination (19-07-84) — Opens the safe in the Manor Estate dining room. Contains gold and a unique accessory.
Item Priority — What to Grab First
Resources are limited, so you need to prioritize. Here's what you should grab as soon as possible:
- Crowbar — Prison basement. Opens up so many paths.
- Warden's Key — Prison upper office. Get that revolver.
- Lead Pipe — Streets District sewer entrance. Your main melee weapon.
- Lockpicks — Market Row hidden compartment. You'll need these.
- Bronze Gear — Clock Tower puzzle. Opens the sewers.
- Crossbow — Manor Estate attic. Silent ranged option.
- Gas Canister — Manor Estate garden shed. Smoke bombs save lives.
- Manor Crest — Manor Estate master bedroom. Progresses the game.
💡 Pro Tip: The order above is roughly the order you'll encounter these items if you explore thoroughly. Don't rush — exploration is always rewarded in Gloomwood.
