Area Overview
Gloomwood's campaign is divided into several distinct districts, each with its own atmosphere, enemy types, and challenges. This walkthrough covers the critical path as well as optional content. The game is non-linear within each district, so feel free to explore off the beaten path.
Major Areas (in recommended order):
- The Prison — Tutorial area and first escape.
- The Streets District — The main hub of the early game.
- The Manor Estate — A sprawling mansion with complex interior navigation.
- The Sewers & Underground — Dark, claustrophobic tunnels beneath the city.
- The Cathedral — The final area and escape sequence.
💡 Pro Tip: Explore each district thoroughly before moving to the next. Some items from earlier areas are needed to solve puzzles later.
The Streets District
After escaping the prison, you emerge into the Streets District. This is your first real taste of Gloomwood's open-ended level design. The district is a maze of alleys, shops, and residential buildings.
Key Locations
- Safe House #1 (The Apothecary): Located above the herbalist's shop. The key is on the counter inside the shop. Contains a save point and storage chest.
- The Locked Armory: Requires the Warden's Key, found in the prison's upper office (accessible via a rooftop shortcut). Contains the revolver and 12 bullets.
- Market Row: A street of vendor stalls. Most are abandoned, but one stall has a hidden compartment with lockpicks. Check under the wooden crates.
- The Clock Tower: A landmark visible from anywhere in the district. The base contains a puzzle: align the clock hands to 3:15 (the time on a note found in the apothecary). Rewards the Bronze Gear.
Puzzle: The Clock Tower
Inside the clock tower base, you will find a mechanism with two dials. The note in the apothecary mentions "the hour of the doctor's appointment" — 3:15. Set the hour hand to 3 and the minute hand to 15. This opens a hidden compartment containing the Bronze Gear, needed for the Sewer gate.
The Manor Estate
The Manor Estate is a large, multi-story building surrounded by a walled garden. It is patrolled by Crow Men and contains the second major key item: the Manor Crest.
Ground Floor
- Foyer: Two Crow Men patrol here. Wait for them to separate before crossing. The staircase to the upper floor is to the left.
- Dining Room: Contains a safe behind a painting. The combination is in a letter on the desk in the study (upstairs). Combination: 19-07-84.
- Kitchen: A hiding spot in the pantry. Also contains a meat hook that can be used to distract hounds.
Upper Floor
- Study: Contains the safe combination letter and a key to the garden shed.
- Master Bedroom: The Manor Crest is on the nightstand. Grabbing it triggers an alarm — Crow Men will converge on your location. Exit through the balcony.
- Attic: Accessible via a pull-down ladder in the hallway. Contains a crossbow and 5 bolts.
💡 Pro Tip: The garden shed contains a gas canister. Combine it with a rag to create a makeshift smoke bomb for covering your escape.
Sewers & Underground
The sewers connect the Streets District to the Cathedral approach. They are dark, flooded in places, and infested with rats and worse.
Navigation
- Entrance: The main sewer grate is in Market Row. Use the Bronze Gear from the Clock Tower to open it.
- The Flooded Section: You will need to swim through a submerged tunnel. Hold your breath — the tunnel is about 15 seconds long. Surface in the next chamber to catch your breath.
- The Rat King's Lair (Optional): A massive aggregation of rats. Throw meat to distract them while you loot the chest behind the nest. Contains the Rat King's Tooth (used for a unique dagger upgrade).
- The Pump Room: Activate the pump to drain the next section. Requires two levers to be pulled simultaneously. Use a heavy object (like a crate) to hold one lever while you pull the other.
Exit
The sewer exit leads to a maintenance shed in the Cathedral grounds. Stock up before proceeding — the next area is the most dangerous in the game.
Final Escape Sequence
The Cathedral is the climax of Gloomwood's current content. It is a gauntlet of enemies, traps, and puzzles leading to the final escape.
Key Steps
- Enter the Cathedral: The front doors are locked. Use the side entrance through the bell tower. Climb the ladder and cross the rafters to drop into the main hall.
- The Altar Puzzle: Three statues around the altar must be rotated to face the center. The correct orientation is hinted at by stained glass windows: left statue faces right, center faces forward, right statue faces left.
- The Descent: Solving the altar puzzle opens a trapdoor to the catacombs below. Navigate the crypts, avoiding the elite Crow Men patrols.
- The Final Gate: Requires two keys: the Bishop's Key (found in the Cathedral office) and the Warden's Second Key (found in the prison's maximum security wing, accessible via a new route opened after obtaining the Manor Crest).
- Escape: Beyond the final gate is the city's outer wall. A rope leads down to the forest below. Congratulations — you have escaped Gloomwood.
💡 Pro Tip: The Bishop's Key is guarded by a unique enemy — the Bishop's Confessor. He is fast and hits hard. Use the environment: lead him into the crypts and use the narrow corridors to your advantage.
