Stealth Kill Chains

Stealth kills are Gloomwood's most satisfying mechanic, but chaining them requires precise timing and positioning.

The basic stealth kill. Approach an unaware enemy from behind and press the attack button. The animation takes 2 seconds. During this animation, you are vulnerable to detection by other enemies. The key is to ensure no other enemy has line of sight to you during the kill animation. Check your surroundings before committing to a kill.

Chain killing. You can chain stealth kills if enemies are close together. The timing is: kill enemy 1, immediately move to enemy 2's position (they will be alerted by the sound of the first kill), and kill them during their "investigation" animation. The window is about 3 seconds. This works for up to 3 enemies in a chain. Beyond that, the alert level escalates and enemies become too alert for stealth kills.

Body disposal. After a stealth kill, the body remains and can be discovered. If an enemy finds a body, they go into searching state and call for reinforcements. Always hide bodies in closets, dumpsters, or dark corners. Carrying a body slows you down by 50%, so plan your disposal route before killing. The optimal pattern is: kill, grab body, move to hiding spot, hide body, return to patrol route.

Weapon Mastery Techniques

Each weapon in Gloomwood has hidden techniques that most players never discover.

Revolver fanning. The revolver can be "fanned" by rapidly pressing the fire button. This increases fire rate by 200% but reduces accuracy by 60%. Fanning is effective at close range (under 5 meters) where accuracy matters less. The optimal use is against groups of enemies in tight corridors. Fire 3 fanned shots, then take cover to reload.

Sword parry timing. The sword can parry enemy attacks if timed correctly. The parry window is 10 frames (0.17 seconds) at the start of your swing. A successful parry stuns the enemy for 3 seconds and allows a free kill. The timing varies by enemy type — human enemies have predictable swing patterns, while dog enemies are faster and harder to parry.

Crossbow stealth bonus. The crossbow is silent and deals 80 damage per shot. But it has a hidden stealth bonus — if you hit an enemy from behind while they are unaware, the crossbow bolt deals 2x damage (160 damage), enough to one-shot most enemies. This makes the crossbow the ideal weapon for stealth assassinations at range.

Enemy Manipulation Tactics

You can manipulate enemy behavior in sophisticated ways beyond simple stealth.

Sound luring. Throw a bottle or coin to create a sound at a specific location. Enemies will investigate the sound, giving you a clear path or a backstab opportunity. The key is to throw the sound source to a location that is out of enemy line of sight — they will walk to the sound location and look around, giving you a 5-second window to act.

Light manipulation. You can shoot out light sources to create darkness. Each light source has 10 HP and can be destroyed with one bullet or two sword swings. Destroying lights creates darkness that reduces enemy detection range. But be careful — destroying a light in an area with multiple enemies will make them suspicious and cause them to investigate.

Enemy routing. If you create a disturbance in one area (by destroying a light or making a sound), enemies from adjacent areas will come to investigate. This creates a "vacuum" in the adjacent areas that you can exploit. The key is to create a disturbance, wait for enemies to leave their posts, then move through the now-empty area. This is the foundation of all advanced stealth routing.

Environmental Combat

The environment is your most powerful weapon in Gloomwood. Here is how to use it effectively.

Choke points. Narrow corridors and doorways are excellent choke points. Enemies can only approach one at a time, giving you a 1v1 advantage. Use the revolver at choke points — one shot kills most enemies, and you can retreat to reload while the next enemy approaches.

Vertical advantage. Higher ground gives you a significant combat advantage. Enemies on lower ground have reduced accuracy (20% penalty) and take 10% more damage from above. Balconies, rooftops, and staircases are your friends. Always try to engage from higher ground.

Environmental hazards. Certain environmental elements can be used against enemies. Oil barrels explode when shot, dealing 100 damage in a 5-meter radius. Gas leaks can be ignited for area denial. Water conducts electricity (if you have the electric trap). Learn the location of environmental hazards in each area and use them strategically.

Advanced Tactical Guide

Here are advanced tactical patterns for common combat scenarios.

Against groups. Never engage a group directly. Use sound luring to split them up. Throw a bottle to one side, kill the enemy that investigates, then throw another bottle to the other side, kill the next enemy. Repeat until the group is thinned. Only engage the remaining enemies when you have a numerical advantage.

Against dogs. Dogs are the most dangerous enemies in Gloomwood. They are fast, have high hearing acuity, and are hard to stealth kill. The best strategy is to avoid them entirely. If you must engage, use the crossbow from range — dogs have low HP (40) and die to one crossbow shot. Never engage dogs in melee combat.

Against Overseers. Overseers are elite enemies with high HP (200), high damage, and high hearing acuity. They cannot be stealth killed from the front — you must backstab them. The optimal strategy is to lure them to a dark area using sound, then backstab them. If you must fight them directly, use the revolver with fanning at close range — 3 fanned shots will kill an Overseer.
