World Overview

Dread Delusion drops you into a bizarre, fragmented world where continents have been shattered into floating islands. You play as a prisoner exiled to this broken realm, tasked with uncovering the truth behind the cataclysm. The world is equal parts beautiful and terrifying — vibrant purple skies, crumbling stone architecture, and creatures that defy explanation.

The game is an open-world RPG at its core, but it eschews traditional quest markers and waypoints. You navigate by landmarks, NPC directions, and your own intuition. This can be disorienting at first, but it is also what makes exploration so rewarding.

💡 Pro Tip: Talk to every NPC you encounter. Many give vague but crucial directions to hidden locations or quest triggers.

Movement & Travel

Travel between islands is one of the core mechanics. You start with a basic glider that lets you cross short gaps, but you will soon acquire more advanced methods.

  • Gliding: Your starting tool. Use it to cross chasms and reach lower platforms. Wind currents can extend your range.
  • Grappling Hook: Found early in the game. Allows you to pull yourself toward specific anchor points. Essential for vertical exploration.
  • Airship: A mid-game acquisition that lets you travel between major islands freely. Requires fuel, which can be crafted or purchased.
  • Teleportation Shrines: Scattered across the world. Activate them to unlock fast travel points. Always activate a shrine when you find one.

💡 Pro Tip: When gliding, look for updrafts (visible as shimmering air currents). They can carry you to otherwise unreachable areas.

Understanding the Sanity System

Dread Delusion features a unique sanity mechanic that affects both gameplay and narrative. Your sanity depletes when you witness horrific creatures, read forbidden texts, or spend too long in the void between islands.

Effects of Low Sanity:

  • Visual and auditory hallucinations — you may see enemies that are not there, or miss real threats.
  • NPCs become hostile or unresponsive.
  • Certain dialogue options become unavailable.
  • Your character's max health is reduced.

Restoring Sanity: Rest at safe camps, consume certain herbs, or visit sanctuaries dedicated to the old gods. Some quests also reward sanity restoration.

Early Quests to Prioritize

Not all quests are created equal. Here are the ones you should tackle first to set yourself up for success:

  1. "A Broken Compass" — The main story quest that introduces you to the central hub island. Complete this first to unlock the airship docking bay.
  2. "The Herbalist's Request" — A simple fetch quest that rewards you with a sanity-restoring recipe. Invaluable in the early game.
  3. "Mapping the Unknown" — Find and activate three teleportation shrines. Rewards a permanent movement speed boost.
  4. "The Forgotten Forge" — Unlocks basic weapon and armor upgrades. The forge is located beneath the central hub.

Gear & Upgrades

Your equipment in Dread Delusion is limited but meaningful. You will not find dozens of swords — instead, each weapon and piece of armor has distinct properties.

  • Weapons: Swords, axes, staves, and crossbows. Each has a unique moveset. Experiment to find what suits your playstyle.
  • Armor: Light, medium, and heavy sets. Light armor allows faster movement and gliding; heavy armor provides more protection but slows you down.
  • Runes: Found throughout the world, runes can be socketed into weapons and armor to add elemental damage, resistances, or special effects.
  • Upgrade Materials: Scrap metal, void crystals, and ancient alloys are used at forges. Prioritize upgrading your glider and grappling hook first.
