Pacifist Runner — Minimal Interaction

The Pacifist Runner playstyle focuses on completing DARQ with minimal interaction. You avoid enemies, skip optional puzzles, and complete the game as efficiently as possible.

Core strategy. The key to pacifist running is knowing which puzzles are mandatory and which can be skipped. About 40% of DARQ's puzzles are optional — they lead to collectibles or alternative paths but are not required for progression. Learn the mandatory puzzle sequence for each chapter and skip everything else.

Enemy avoidance. Every enemy encounter in DARQ can be avoided. Crawlers can be bypassed by staying in darkness. Watchers can be bypassed by using cover. Hunters can be bypassed by using sound distractions. The key is to learn the safe path through each enemy area. The safe path is always marked by environmental cues.

Optimal route. The optimal pacifist route is: Chapter 1 (mandatory puzzles only), Chapter 2 (skip the optional room), Chapter 3 (use the darkness path to bypass the Crawler), Chapter 4 (use cover to bypass the Watcher), Chapter 5 (solve the mirror puzzle quickly), Chapter 6 (final sequence). This route takes about 45 minutes.

Completionist — Every Secret, Every Item

The Completionist playstyle aims to find every secret, collect every item, and experience every piece of content DARQ has to offer.

Collectible types. DARQ has three types of collectibles: Dream Shards (glowing fragments that reveal story context), Hidden Drawings (pictures on walls that provide lore), and Secret Items (objects that unlock alternative puzzle solutions). There are 15 Dream Shards, 8 Hidden Drawings, and 5 Secret Items in total.

Dream Shard locations. Dream Shards are hidden in every chapter. They are always in places that require extra effort to reach — behind false walls, in ventilation shafts, or on gravity-shifted surfaces. The most commonly missed Shard is in Chapter 3, on the ceiling of the Crawler room. You need to use a gravity shift to reach it.

Hidden Drawing locations. Hidden Drawings are on walls that look slightly different from the surrounding texture. They are always in areas that are off the main path. The most commonly missed Drawing is in Chapter 5, behind the mirror. You need to rotate the mirror to reveal the drawing on the wall behind it.

Speedrunner — Minimum Time

The Speedrunner playstyle aims to complete DARQ in the shortest possible time using advanced techniques and glitches.

Current world record route. The optimal speedrun route uses several skips: Chapter 2 skip (gravity glitch), Chapter 4 skip (shadow walk), and Chapter 6 skip (object duplication). The route takes approximately 12 minutes for experienced runners.

Key techniques. The most important speedrun techniques are: sprint-jumping (faster than running), crate-clipping (bypass walls), and gravity-shift canceling (skip gravity shift animations). Practice these techniques in the early chapters before attempting a full run.

Split timing. A good speedrun has these split times: Chapter 1 (1:30), Chapter 2 (2:00 with skip), Chapter 3 (2:30), Chapter 4 (1:30 with skip), Chapter 5 (2:00), Chapter 6 (2:30). Total: approximately 12:00. Adjust these targets based on your skill level.

Lore Hunter — Story & Symbolism

The Lore Hunter playstyle focuses on understanding DARQ's deep story and symbolism. This is a slow, methodical playthrough where you examine every detail.

The story beneath the surface. DARQ's surface story is about a boy named Lloyd trapped in a dream. But the deeper story is about trauma, loss, and psychological healing. Each chapter represents a different aspect of Lloyd's psyche. Chapter 1 is denial. Chapter 3 is fear. Chapter 5 is self-reflection. The final chapter is acceptance.

Symbolism guide. The eye symbol represents Lloyd's desire to be seen and understood. The door symbol represents the choices Lloyd faces in dealing with his trauma. The mirror symbol represents self-reflection and the need to confront one's true self. Objects with these symbols are always significant to the story.

Environmental storytelling. Pay attention to the details in each room. Family photographs show a happy family that is no longer together. Children's drawings depict scenes of loss and separation. The gradual decay of the environment as you progress represents Lloyd's deteriorating mental state. The final chapter's bright, open environment represents his acceptance and healing.

Challenge Runs & Self-Imposed Rules

For players who have completed DARQ multiple times, here are challenge runs that add difficulty.

No-death run. Complete the entire game without dying. This requires perfect knowledge of enemy patterns and puzzle solutions. The most dangerous sections are the Crawler chase in Chapter 3 and the Watcher section in Chapter 4. Practice these sections individually before attempting a full run.

No-interaction run. Complete the game while interacting with as few objects as possible. This is an extreme challenge that requires using skips and glitches to bypass mandatory puzzles. Only attempt this after mastering the speedrun route.

Blind run. Complete the game without using the pause menu or any UI elements. This means no checking your inventory, no reading hints, and no looking at the chapter select screen. This is a test of memory and puzzle-solving skill.
