Night Survival Frustrations
Night is the most dangerous time in Darkwood. Here is how to survive it consistently.
Preparation is key. Before nightfall, make sure your hideout is fortified. Board up all windows (requires 2 Scrap Metal each). Reinforce doors (requires 3 Scrap Metal each). Set traps at entry points. Have a weapon ready — the shotgun is best for hideout defense. Have an escape route planned — an unboarded window or back door.
During the attack. When enemies attack, stay calm. Listen for the sounds of breaking boards — this tells you which entry point is being breached. Move to that entry point and prepare to defend. Use the shotgun for close-range defense. If multiple entry points are breached, prioritize the closest threat. If you are overwhelmed, escape through your planned route.
After the attack. After the night attack, assess the damage. Repair broken boards and doors. Reset traps. Check your resources — you may need to gather more Scrap Metal and herbs. The morning after a heavy attack is the most vulnerable time — enemies may still be in the area.
Resource Scarcity Solutions
Resources are scarce in Darkwood. Here is how to manage them efficiently.
Priority list. Herbs are the most important resource — they are used for healing and crafting healing salves. Scrap Metal is second — it is used for repairs, fortification, and crafting. Alcohol is third — it is used for Molotov cocktails and healing salves. Ammo is fourth — it is used for firearms. Always prioritize herbs and Scrap Metal.
Farming routes. Resources respawn every 3 in-game days. The best farming route is: start at your hideout, go to the forest clearing (6 herb nodes), then to the village (3 Scrap Metal spawns), then to the church (2 Alcohol spawns). This route takes about 10 minutes and yields enough resources for 2-3 days of survival.
Conservation tips. Use melee weapons instead of firearms to save ammo. Use bandages instead of healing salves for minor wounds. Use furniture instead of Scrap Metal for blocking doors. Every resource saved is a resource you do not need to gather.
Progression Blocks & Fixes
Several progression blocks can trap players. Here is how to avoid them.
The "key item" block. Certain areas require specific key items. The village church key is in the priest's house. The laboratory key is in the doctor's office. The hideout upgrade materials are in specific locations. Always check every container and body for key items.
The "event" block. Certain events are required for progression. The Stranger appears on Day 3 — trade with him to get the "Mysterious Key." The Wolfman attacks on Night 5 — surviving this attack is required for progression. The Doctor appears on Day 7 — talk to him to get the "Laboratory Key." Missing these events can softlock your game.
The "crafting" block. Certain recipes require specific ingredients. The Molotov Cocktail requires Alcohol + Rag + Nail. The Healing Salve requires 2 Herbs + Alcohol. The Repair Kit requires Scrap Metal + Duct Tape. If you are missing ingredients, check the appropriate locations — Alcohol is in the church, Herbs are in the forest, Scrap Metal is in the village.
Combat Difficulty Spikes
Certain combat encounters in Darkwood are notoriously difficult. Here is how to handle them.
The forest at night. Exploring the forest at night is extremely dangerous. Enemies are more aggressive and numerous. The best strategy is to not explore at night — stay in your hideout. If you must go out, use a lantern (attracts fewer enemies than a torch) and move silently.
The village. The village has multiple enemies, including dogs and Biters. The best strategy is to clear the village during the day when enemies are less aggressive. Use the shovel for silent kills. Save your pistol for dogs. The village is the best source of Scrap Metal and ammo.
The laboratory. The laboratory has Chompers and other dangerous enemies. The best strategy is to use Molotov cocktails for Chompers and the shotgun for groups. The laboratory is the final area — save your best resources for this section.
General Tips for Smoother Gameplay
Here are general tips that make Darkwood a smoother experience.
Save often. Darkwood has a manual save system. Save before exploring new areas, before nightfall, and before boss encounters. If you die, you can reload your save. The game has multiple save slots — use them.
Use the map. The map is your most important tool. Mark important locations: resource spawns, enemy territories, safe houses, and key item locations. The map also shows your current position and the positions of nearby enemies (if you have the "Radar" upgrade).
Learn from death. Death is a learning tool in Darkwood. When you die, think about what went wrong. Did you run out of resources? Did you make too much noise? Did you explore at night? Learn from your mistakes and adjust your strategy.
