Pacifist Survivor — Never Kill, Always Survive

The Pacifist Survivor build challenges you to complete Darkwood without killing any enemies. This is the ultimate test of stealth and survival knowledge.

Core strategy is avoidance. You need to know every enemy patrol route, every safe house, and every alternate path. The key is to never engage enemies — always run, hide, or distract. Use sound distractions (throwing objects) to lure enemies away from your path. Use darkness to hide — enemies cannot see you in complete darkness.

Hideout defense without killing. You cannot kill enemies attacking your hideout. Instead, fortify your hideout to the maximum. Board up all windows and doors. Set traps to slow enemies. Use furniture to block entry points. If enemies break in, escape through the back door and hide in the forest until morning. Your hideout will be damaged but repairable.

Resource gathering. Without killing enemies, you need alternative resource sources. Trade with the Stranger for rare items. Search containers in safe areas. Loot abandoned buildings during the day. The forest has herbs that respawn every 3 days. The village has scrap metal in containers. The church has alcohol in the basement.

Gunslinger — Maximum Firepower

The Gunslinger build focuses on firearm combat. You are loud, aggressive, and deadly.

Weapon focus. The pistol and shotgun are your primary weapons. The pistol is for general combat — headshots kill most enemies in one shot. The shotgun is for emergencies — it kills multiple enemies at close range. Always carry both weapons and plenty of ammunition.

Ammo management. Ammo is scarce in Darkwood. You need to conserve shots. Never waste a bullet on a Biter — use the shovel for Biters. Save bullets for dogs and Chompers. The best ammo sources are: the village police station (12 bullets, respawns), the church basement (6 bullets, respawns), and the laboratory (18 bullets, respawns).

Equipment synergy. The "Gun Cleaning Kit" (increases firearm accuracy by 20%) is essential. It is found in the village police station. The "Ammo Pouch" (increases ammo capacity by 12) is found in the church. The "Silencer" (reduces gunshot sound by 50%) is found in the laboratory. With all three, you are a walking arsenal.

Trapper — Let the Environment Kill

The Trapper build uses traps and environmental hazards to eliminate enemies without direct confrontation.

Trap types. There are three trap types in Darkwood: Bear Traps (deal 50 damage and immobilize), Wire Traps (deal 30 damage and alert you), and Explosive Traps (deal 100 damage in an area). Bear Traps are found in the forest. Wire Traps are crafted from Scrap Metal. Explosive Traps are crafted from Gunpowder and Scrap Metal.

Trap placement strategy. Place traps at choke points — narrow paths, doorways, and windows. Enemies follow predictable patrol routes, so place traps along their path. The optimal placement is just around a corner, where enemies cannot see the trap until they step on it. Combine traps with sound luring to guide enemies into your kill zones.

Advanced trap combos. Place a Bear Trap in front of an Explosive Trap. When an enemy steps on the Bear Trap, they are immobilized and take 50 damage. Then the Explosive Trap triggers, dealing an additional 100 damage. This combo kills any non-boss enemy instantly. The "Trapper's Manual" (increases trap damage by 30%) is found in the laboratory.

Speedrunner — Minimum Days

The Speedrunner build aims to complete Darkwood in the fewest in-game days possible.

Optimal route. The optimal speedrun route completes the game in 7 days. Day 1: explore the forest, find the hideout, gather resources. Day 2: explore the village, find the pistol. Day 3: trade with the Stranger, get the key item. Day 4: explore the church, find the shotgun. Day 5: survive the Wolfman attack. Day 6: explore the laboratory, find the final item. Day 7: complete the game.

Time management. Every minute counts. Explore during Morning and Afternoon. Return to your hideout by Evening. Use the map to plan efficient routes. Do not waste time on optional content — focus on the critical path. Skip resource gathering if you have enough supplies.

Skip strategies. Certain sections can be skipped. The church basement can be bypassed by using the rooftop entrance. The laboratory's second floor can be skipped by using the elevator shortcut. The forest's eastern section is entirely optional — do not explore it.

Challenge Runs & Self-Imposed Rules

For players who have completed Darkwood multiple times, here are challenge runs that add difficulty.

No-death run. Complete the entire game without dying. This requires perfect knowledge of enemy patterns and survival mechanics. The most dangerous sections are Night 5 (Wolfman attack) and the laboratory (Chomper gauntlet). Practice these sections individually before attempting a full run.

No-crafting run. Complete the game without crafting any items. You can only use items that you find. This means no Molotov cocktails, no healing salves, and no repair kits. This is an extreme challenge that requires careful resource management.

No-hideout run. Complete the game without using your hideout. You cannot fortify, rest, or store items in your hideout. You must survive each night in the forest. This is the ultimate test of survival skill.
