Developer Secrets & References

The developers of Darkwood left their mark throughout the game. Here are the most interesting secrets.

The "Kickstarter" reference. In the hideout, there is a poster on the wall that reads "Funded by 10,000 brave souls." This is a reference to Darkwood's successful Kickstarter campaign. The poster is in the main room of the hideout, near the workbench. Interacting with the poster gives a buff called "Backer's Blessing" which increases luck by 10% for 1 hour.

The "Polish" reference. Darkwood was developed by Acid Wizard Studio, a Polish studio. In the village, there is a shop with a sign that reads "Polski Sklep" (Polish Shop). Inside, you can find Polish food items like "Pierogi" (restores 20 HP) and "Kielbasa" (restores 30 HP). These items are only found in this shop.

The developer cameo. One of the NPCs in the game is modeled after the lead developer. He is the "Madman" NPC that appears in the forest. If you talk to him, he rambles about game development and says things like "The AI is broken again" and "I need to fix the collision detection." He also drops a unique item called the "Developer's Notes" which contains concept art.

World Lore & History

Darkwood's world has a deep and disturbing history. Here is what you may have missed.

The forest's origin. The forest was not always a twisted, monster-infested place. It was once a normal forest, home to a small community. The transformation began when a meteorite crashed in the forest, bringing with it a strange, otherworldly substance. This substance, known as the "Dark Matter," corrupted the forest and its inhabitants, turning them into monsters.

The previous inhabitants. Before the corruption, the forest was home to a community of farmers and hunters. You can find their abandoned homes, tools, and personal belongings throughout the forest. The village was the center of the community. The church was a place of worship. The laboratory was a research facility studying the meteorite. The corruption spread from the laboratory.

The truth about the protagonist. The protagonist of Darkwood is not a random survivor. He is a former resident of the forest who escaped the initial corruption but was drawn back by a mysterious force. His past is hinted at through environmental storytelling — photographs in the hideout show him with a family that is no longer there. The game's ending reveals the truth about his connection to the forest.

Hidden Areas & Secret Rooms

Darkwood has several hidden areas that are easy to miss. Here is where to find them.

The hideout basement. Your hideout has a basement that is not immediately accessible. To access it, you need to find the "Basement Key" in the village. The basement contains a workbench upgrade, a stash of resources, and a hidden note that reveals more about the protagonist's past.

The church catacombs. The church has a hidden catacomb beneath it. The entrance is behind the altar — interact with the altar to reveal a hidden staircase. The catacombs contain rare items, including the "Shotgun" and a unique accessory called the "Saint's Medallion" (reduces sanity loss by 25%).

The laboratory vault. The laboratory has a hidden vault that requires a 4-digit code. The code is hinted at by notes found throughout the laboratory. The code is 1984 (a reference to George Orwell's novel). The vault contains the "Experimental Weapon" — a unique firearm that deals 100 damage per shot.

Missable Items & Equipment

Several powerful items in Darkwood are easy to miss. Here is where to find them.

The "Silencer." Reduces gunshot sound by 50%. Found in the laboratory, in a locked cabinet in the security room. The key is in the laboratory director's office, in the top drawer of his desk. The Silencer is essential for stealthy firearm use.

The "Radar." Shows enemy positions on the map. Found in the village, in the radio tower. You need to climb the tower to reach it. The Radar is a hideout upgrade that must be installed at the workbench. It requires 5 Scrap Metal and 3 Electronic Parts to install.

The "Gas Mask." Protects against toxic gas in the laboratory. Found in the church catacombs, in a locked chest. The key is in the priest's house, in the bedroom. The Gas Mask is essential for exploring the laboratory's lower levels.

Fun Easter Eggs & References

Here are some fun easter eggs that are worth seeking out.

The "cat" easter egg. There is a cat that appears in random locations throughout the game. If you find the cat in all 4 locations (hideout, forest, village, church), you unlock a secret achievement. The cat does nothing gameplay-wise — it is just a fun easter egg for observant players.

The "Silent Hill" reference. In the forest, there is a radio that plays static. If you interact with the radio, the static clears for a moment and you hear a voice say "In my restless dreams, I see that town." This is a direct quote from Silent Hill 2. The radio is near the entrance to the village.

The "meta" easter egg. In the laboratory, there is a computer monitor that displays the game's credits. If you interact with the monitor, the credits scroll by. At the end of the credits, a message appears: "Thank you for playing. The forest remembers." This is a fourth-wall-breaking moment that fits the game's theme.
