Weapon Mastery Guide
Each weapon in Darkwood has unique properties and optimal use cases.
The Shovel. The shovel is the best early-game weapon. It deals 25 damage, has good range, and can be used to dig up buried items. The shovel's heavy attack (hold attack button) deals 40 damage and has a knockback effect. Use the heavy attack to create space between you and enemies. The shovel is also silent — it does not attract enemies when used.
The Pistol. The pistol deals 50 damage per shot and has a 6-round magazine. It is loud — gunfire attracts enemies from 20 meters away. Use the pistol only when necessary. Headshots deal 100 damage (2x multiplier). The pistol is most effective against dogs and Chompers. Always reload after combat — a empty pistol is useless in an emergency.
The Shotgun. The shotgun deals 80 damage per shot at close range (under 5 meters). Damage drops off significantly at range — at 10 meters, it deals only 30 damage. The shotgun has a 2-round magazine. Use it for hideout defense — it can kill multiple enemies with one shot if they are grouped. The shotgun is very loud — it attracts enemies from 30 meters away.
Enemy Weakness Exploitation
Every enemy in Darkwood has specific weaknesses that can be exploited.
Biters. Biters are weak to fire. One Molotov cocktail kills a group of Biters. They are also afraid of light — a lit torch keeps them at bay. Biters cannot climb, so standing on furniture or crates makes you safe from them. Their attacks are slow and telegraphed — dodge sideways to avoid them.
Dogs. Dogs are fast but have low HP (30). One shovel hit or one pistol shot kills a dog. Dogs are attracted to sound and blood. To avoid dogs, move silently and bandage bleeding wounds immediately. If a dog attacks, dodge sideways and counterattack — dogs have a long recovery animation after missing an attack.
Chompers. Chompers are slow but have high HP (100) and deal massive damage. They are vulnerable to fire — 3 Molotov cocktails kill one. Chompers are also vulnerable to traps — a Bear Trap deals 50 damage and immobilizes them for 5 seconds. Never fight a Chomper in melee — use ranged weapons or fire.
Advanced Survival Tactics
Here are advanced tactics for surviving Darkwood's most dangerous situations.
Night survival. During Night, stay in your hideout. Board up windows and doors. Set traps at entry points. Use furniture to block doors. If enemies break in, use the shotgun for close-range defense. If you are overwhelmed, use the back door to escape and hide in the forest until morning.
Resource management. Prioritize resources based on your needs. Herbs are the most important resource — they are used for healing and crafting. Scrap Metal is used for repairs and crafting. Alcohol is used for Molotov cocktails and healing salves. Always carry at least 3 bandages, 1 Molotov cocktail, and 1 repair kit.
Exploration strategy. Explore during Morning and Afternoon. Return to your hideout by Evening. Never explore at Night — the risk is too high. When exploring, move slowly and listen for enemy sounds. Use the map to mark important locations (resource spawns, enemy territories, safe houses).
Hideout Defense Strategies
Your hideout is your lifeline. Here is how to defend it effectively.
Fortification. Board up all windows (requires 2 Scrap Metal each). Reinforce doors (requires 3 Scrap Metal each). Set Bear Traps at entry points. Place furniture in front of doors to slow enemies. The more fortified your hideout, the fewer enemies can enter.
Defense layout. The optimal defense layout is: board up all windows except one (use the unboarded window as an escape route). Reinforce the front door. Place Bear Traps at the front door and the unboarded window. Place furniture in front of the back door. Keep a shotgun and ammunition near the front door.
Escape plan. Always have an escape route. If enemies overwhelm your defenses, use the unboarded window to escape. Run to the forest and hide until morning. Your hideout will be damaged but repairable. Never fight to the death — survival is more important than defending your hideout.
Boss Strategies & Patterns
Darkwood has several boss encounters. Here is how to survive them.
The Wolfman. The Wolfman appears on Night 5. He is fast, deals high damage, and can climb. Strategy: use fire — Molotov cocktails deal massive damage to the Wolfman. He is also vulnerable to traps — Bear Traps immobilize him for 3 seconds. The Wolfman has three phases: Phase 1 (full HP), Phase 2 (50% HP, faster attacks), Phase 3 (25% HP, enraged). Save your Molotov cocktails for Phase 3.
The Doctor. The Doctor appears on Day 7. He is a human NPC with a pistol. Strategy: the Doctor is not hostile initially. Talk to him to progress the story. If you attack him, he fights back with a pistol. He has 50 HP and dies to 2 shovel hits or 1 pistol shot. Killing the Doctor locks you out of certain story content.
The Stranger. The Stranger appears on Day 3. He is a mysterious NPC who offers trades. Strategy: the Stranger is not hostile. Trade with him to get rare items. He offers unique items that cannot be found elsewhere. Always trade with the Stranger when he appears.
