Preparation Checklist

Before you start hunting nursery rhymes across Bright Falls, Watery, and Cauldron Lake, make sure you have:

  • Progress far enough in Saga's story to access all three major map areas — Cauldron Lake, Watery, and Bright Falls — as rhymes are spread across all zones
  • Collect the Mayoral Charm from the very first rhyme at Cauldron Lake — this charm reveals nearby collectibles when equipped, making subsequent doll hunts significantly easier
  • Unlock the Bolt Cutters (found in the Bright Falls Sheriff's Station basement during Return 5) — several rhyme locations and doll spawn points are behind chain-link gates
  • Have at least one spare inventory slot — each completed rhyme rewards a unique Charm, and the game will not let you pick up a new Charm if your Charm inventory is full (max 3 equipped, but unlimited in storage)
  • Keep the Screwdriver handy — some dolls are partially obscured by breakable wooden planks in out-of-the-way cabins

Step-by-Step Guide

Cauldron Lake — Rhyme 1: "The old man who drowned in the lake…"

This is the tutorial rhyme, unmissable. The chalk drawing is on a large rock northwest of the Witch's Hut, near the shoreline. The rhyme reads: "The old man who drowned in the lake / He rests in the water so bleak / The waves washed him back to the shore / Where he'll slumber forevermore." You need the Wise Elder doll. It is sitting on a tree stump exactly 15 meters east of the rhyme drawing — impossible to miss in daylight. Place it on the water-wave chalk symbol (the wavy line drawing to the right of the text). A Taken will spawn immediately; defeat it, and the Mayoral Charm will appear on the rock. Equip this charm — it emits a subtle shimmer effect on your minimap whenever you are within 30 meters of a nursery rhyme location or doll pickup.

Cauldron Lake — Rhyme 2: "The mother who watches her babe…"

Located south of the Private Cabin, near the river crossing. The chalk drawing is on a flat stone beside a fallen log. The rhyme: "The mother who watches her babe / With a love that shall never fade / She cradles the child in her arms / Keeping it safe from all harm." You need two dolls: the Mother doll (found inside the Private Cabin, on the kitchen table — enter through the back door after obtaining the Screwdriver) and the Child doll (found beneath the overturned rowboat at the Cauldron Lake dock, east of the rhyme location). Place the Mother doll on the "house" chalk symbol and the Child doll on the "cradle" symbol. A pack of 3 Taken wolves spawns. Defeat all three, and the Coffee Mug Charm appears on the fallen log. This charm increases thrown item damage by 20% and is essential for players who rely on flares and flashbangs.

Watery — Rhyme 3: "The hero who slayed the dark beast…"

Found in Watery, behind the Coffee World gift shop near the Kalevala Knights motorcycle clubhouse. The chalk: "The hero who slayed the dark beast / Returned to his home for a feast / But the monster he thought was dead / Was hiding beneath his bed." Requires the Hero doll and the Monster doll. The Hero doll is inside the Coffee World workshop (enter through the back door behind the gift shop — it's on a workbench covered in tools). The Monster doll is inside the ranger station at Watery's northeastern edge, sitting on a filing cabinet. Place the Hero on the "sword" chalk and the Monster on the "bed" symbol. A single heavy Taken (axe-wielding variant) spawns. Defeat it to receive the Lantern Charm, which extends flashlight battery life by 50%. This is a game-changer for resource management on higher difficulties.

Watery — Rhyme 4: "The maiden who walked through the woods…"

On the path between Watery and the Lighthouse, west of the trailer park. The chalk is on a large boulder at a fork in the trail. Rhyme: "The maiden who walked through the woods / Carried berries and flowers and goods / She met a strange creature so tall / Who asked her to give him her all." Requires the Maiden doll and the Deer doll. The Maiden doll is inside the abandoned trailer at the Watery trailer park (second trailer from the left, on a bookshelf). The Deer doll is found at the Ranger Station near Cauldron Lake's northwestern edge, mounted on the wall above the fireplace. Place Maiden on the "trees" chalk symbol and Deer on the "tall" symbol. Two fast-moving Taken (runner variants) spawn simultaneously. Kill them to receive the Deer Charm, which grants a 10% speed boost in the Dark Place. This charm is extremely helpful for the Saga overlap sections in the Valhalla Nursing Home.

Bright Falls — Rhyme 5: "The trickster who laughed at the king…"

In Bright Falls, behind the Oh Deer Diner, in the small storage shed. The chalk: "The trickster who laughed at the king / Was given a bell for his sin / He rang it wherever he went / And nobody knew what it meant." Requires the Trickster doll and the King doll. The Trickster doll is on the second floor of the Bright Falls Lodge, on the windowsill of Room 204. The King doll is inside the Bright Falls Sheriff's Station evidence locker (requires Bolt Cutters to access the back room). Place Trickster on the "bell" chalk and King on the "crown" symbol. A Shadow Taken (the most dangerous enemy type, immune to flashlight until the darkness shield is broken) spawns. Focus your flashlight beam on the Shadow for 3 seconds to break its shield, then use the Hunting Rifle or Crossbow for a clean headshot. Reward: the King Charm, which increases all resource drops by 25%. This is the best farming charm in the game.

Bright Falls — Rhyme 6: "The father who searched for his son…"

Inside the Valhalla Nursing Home courtyard, accessible during Return 6: Scratch. The chalk is on the garden wall near the gazebo. Rhyme: "The father who searched for his son / Walked under the moon and the sun / He carried a lantern so bright / To guide his boy home through the night." Requires the Father doll and the Lantern doll. The Father doll is in the Nursing Home's activity room (first floor, left wing), tucked inside the piano bench. The Lantern doll is in the basement morgue of the Nursing Home, on a shelf next to preservation jars. Place Father on the "moon" chalk and Lantern on the "sun" symbol. This is the only rhyme that spawns two separate Taken encounters: first a wave of 2 regular Taken, then after 10 seconds a heavy Taken with a sledgehammer. Defeat both waves to earn the Father Charm, which reduces all damage taken by 15% while the flashlight is turned off. This charm is the single best defensive option in the game.

Player FAQ

Can I complete nursery rhymes after finishing the main story?

Yes and no. Saga's rhymes in Cauldron Lake, Watery, and Bright Falls can be completed anytime before the point of no return — which is the Valhalla Nursing Home sequence in Return 7: Summoning. Once you cross into the Dark Place for the final confrontation, Saga's overworld is locked. However, any rhymes you missed can still be completed in New Game Plus. There is also one rhyme exclusive to the Final Draft (NG+) — a chalk drawing appears on a new location behind the Elderwood Palace Lodge that requires a doll found only in NG+ (the Writer doll, found in Alan's apartment in the Dark Place). This rhyme rewards the Typewriter Charm, which grants infinite flashlight battery but disables all other charm slots.

What happens if I place the wrong doll on a chalk symbol?

Nothing bad happens — the doll simply won't stick to the chalk. The game uses a soft physics system where incorrect dolls slide off the chalk after 2 seconds with a subtle wrong-answer sound cue (a low viola note). You cannot permanently lock yourself out of a puzzle by placing the wrong doll. If you are missing a specific doll, the rhyme will sit incomplete until you find it; there is no decay or fail state. That said, placing the wrong doll does trigger a unique piece of ambient dialogue from Saga where she mutters "That's not right…" or "Hmm, that doesn't fit the story." These are just flavor lines.

Are the nursery rhymes connected to the game's deeper lore?

Absolutely. The nursery rhymes are not random puzzles — they are fractured memories of the Anderson family history, filtered through the Dark Place's reality-bending logic. The "mother who watches her babe" rhyme (Cauldron Lake #2) is a distorted retelling of Saga's grandmother raising Saga's mother Freya. The "father who searched for his son" rhyme (Bright Falls #6) is Tor Anderson's perspective on searching for his deceased son through the power of the Clicker. The "trickster who laughed at the king" (Bright Falls #5) is a reference to Mr. Scratch himself, mocking the Dark Presence ("the king"). Every charm reward is connected to the rhyme's thematic meaning: the Father Charm reduces damage (a father's protection), the Lantern Charm extends battery (light against darkness), the Coffee Mug Charm boosts throwables (the mundane made weaponized — a core Alan Wake theme).

Why can't I find the Monster doll for Watery Rhyme 3?

The Monster doll in the Watery Ranger Station is invisible until you have triggered the first Cult of the Tree encounter at the Coffee World gift shop. This is a common soft-lock frustration. If you arrive at the ranger station early (before completing the Coffee World segment), the filing cabinet where the Monster doll should be will be empty. Progress Saga's story until you have spoken to Ilmo and Jaakko at the Kalevala Knights clubhouse and witnessed the Cult's ritual. When you return to the ranger station afterward, the doll will have materialized. This is a deliberate trigger from Remedy — the Monster doll represents the Cult's presence in Watery, so it only appears once the Cult is narratively active in the area.

Hidden Secrets & Easter Eggs

Quantum Break Reference — The Time Knife Doll

If you complete all 6 nursery rhymes and return to the Oh Deer Diner at exactly 3:33 AM (in-game time, visible on Saga's wristwatch), a 7th chalk rhyme appears on the diner's back wall. The rhyme reads: "A knife that cuts through seconds and hours / A weapon of terrible powers." A Time Knife doll (explicitly a Quantum Break reference) will be sitting on the diner counter. Placing it on the chalk spawns no enemies — instead, the screen flashes white for 2 seconds, Saga says "What the hell?", and the Night Springs theme plays faintly in the diner jukebox. You receive no charm for this, but the interaction permanently adds a Quantum Break poster to the wall of Saga's Mind Place. This is Remedy's way of connecting their extended universe.

The Ahti Bucket Puzzle — Hidden Outside the Nursery Rhyme System

Behind the Watery sauna (the one where Ahti sings "Yötön Yö"), there is a janitor's bucket and mop leaning against a fir tree. If you examine the bucket, Saga notes: "A janitor's bucket. What's it doing all the way out here?" This is not a nursery rhyme chalk drawing, but if you bring the janitor bucket to the Coffee World maintenance shed and place it on the "water" symbol from any incomplete rhyme, the water chalk glows blue and the bucket fills with coffee. Drinking from it fully restores Saga's health and gives a 5-minute damage buff. This Easter egg is specifically a Control reference (Ahti the janitor), and the coffee bucket interaction can only be done once per playthrough. The Finnish text on the bucket reads "Työtä ja huolenpitoa" — "Work and care," Ahti's catchphrase from Control.
